Practical Guide

At a glance: the two formats

Each person is matched with exactly one recipient. If your group uses White Elephant wording, the same draw still gives you a fair one-to-one assignment without self-matches.

Some groups combine a classic Secret Santa draw with a separate White Elephant exchange. This page explains the clean draw logic first.

This is how the draw works

Under Exclusions you can specify which people are not allowed to move (e.g. couples, direct team, family). These rules automatically apply to the draw.

Exclusions – this is how they work

5 people, no exclusions → There are many valid distributions. The draw works immediately.

6 people, two pairs are not allowed to move each other → As long as the remaining people remain “free”, there is usually a valid round.

Minimum requirements for a successful draw

How many people do you need? A classic Secret Santa draw works from 2 people. Larger groups usually give you more varied and more flexible pairings.

Are self-draws or duplicate assignments prevented? Yes. Nobody is matched with themselves, and each draw produces one clear recipient per person.

Practical tips for private groups, teams and community rounds

If your group combines Secret Santa with a separate White Elephant exchange, keep those rules clearly separated in the invitation so nobody mixes them up.

How exactly do exclusions work? Exclusions determine who is not allowed to draw whom (e.g. pairs/teams). They are valid in both draws.

Which functions make the difference here?

The draw is based on a fair 1:1 logic without self-draws. Stored exclusions are actively taken into account in the calculation.

If participant lists change late, you can update the group in a controlled manner and only then start a new draw.

Wichtlify Pro

If you need more control: Wichtlify Pro

For larger or recurring rounds, Wichtlify Pro expands the standard process to include Smart Draw, emergency assistant, auto-reminder, admin broadcasts as well as insights and event status.

This allows you to reduce manual effort, react more quickly to changes and keep the group stable despite high dynamics.

FAQ

When will things get tight? (borderline cases)?

Start with the final list of participants, set the necessary exclusions and only then carry out the drawing. This ensures that the allocation remains fair and comprehensible.
