Then define who should not draw whom. Common exclusions include siblings, children from the same household, parent-child pairings or very close friends if you want the draw to feel more surprising.

Older children and teenagers can make more decisions themselves. Themes, wishes or small challenges can work well, as long as the budget feels comfortable for everyone.

A few concrete rules are easier to understand

For children, concrete examples are often better than long rules. If you still need to settle budget, gift expectations, handover and the own-link rule, set the gift rules first.

Recommended agreements include a small budget, kind and age-appropriate gifts, clear participation, useful exclusions, a fixed exchange date and no gifts far above the agreed budget.

Taking part

Children do not need their own phone or email address

Not every child has their own phone, email address or account. That is completely fine. If low-friction participation matters, Secret Santa without email is a useful next step.

Exclusions

At school or daycare, an adult needs to stay responsible

In school, daycare or group settings, clear communication matters. Parents should know whether participation is voluntary, what the budget is, when the gift should be brought and whether there are special rules.

For these groups, it helps to prepare a short parent message before the draw. After that, the draw can be organized online and personal links can be sent to the right parents or participants.
